Taxonomy
Aulosteges was named by von Helmersen (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: P Wc P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 1,411]. It is the type genus of Aulostegidae, Aulosteginae.

It was reranked as Strophalosia (Aulosteges) by Shumard (1859).

It was assigned to Strophalosia by Shumard (1859); to Aulosteginae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
