Taxonomy
Platyxystrodus was named by Hay (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 454; nomen novum for Xystrodus Morris & Roberts, 1862]. Its type is Cochliodus striatus.

It was assigned to Cochliodontidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); to Chondrenchelyiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chondrenchelyidae by Nelson (2006).
