Mingenewia was named by Archbold (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 431]. Its type is Mingenewia anomala. It is the type genus of Mingenewiinae.
It was assigned to Mingenewiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
