Xystostrophia was named by Havlicek (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25,416].

It was assigned to Chilidiopsinae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chilidiopsidae by Stigall Rode (2005), Halamski et al. (2022).
