Spongiophonus was named by Wills (1947). Its type is Spongiophonus pustulosus. It is the type genus of Spongiophonoidea, Spongiophonidae.
It was assigned to Mesophonidae by Petrunkevitch (1953); and to Spongiophonidae by Kjellesvig-Waering (1986), Dunlop et al. (2013).
