Costistricklandia was named by Amsden (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. Its type is Costistricklandia gaspeensis.

It was assigned to Stricklandiidae by Bassett and Cocks (1974); to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stricklandiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
