Chonetes carbonifera was named by Keyserling (1846) [Chonetes sacrinulata var. carbonifera].
It was recombined as Neochonetes carboniferus by Fantini Sestini (1965), Sun (1991); it was recombined as Lissochonetes carbonifera by Singh (1978); it was recombined as Neochonetes carbonifera by Liao (1979), Yang (1984), Li et al. (1986), Chen (2004), Chen and Shi (2006); it was recombined as Neochonetes (Neochonetes) carboniferus by Crippa and Angiolini (2014).
