Minysphenia was named by Grant (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step Sepkoski's reference number: 871]. Its type is Minysphenia conopia. It is the type genus of Minyspheniinae.
It was assigned to Minyspheniinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
