Protoischnurus was named by de Carvalho and Lourenço (2001). Its type is Protoischnurus axelrodorum. It is the type genus of Protoischnuridae.
It was assigned to Hormuriinae by Menon (2007); to Hemiscorpiidae by Dunlop et al. (2013); and to Protoischnuridae by de Carvalho and Lourenço (2001), de Carvalho et al. (2023).
