Giganotosaurini was named by Brusatte and Sereno (2008). It is not extant. Its type is Giganotosaurus.

It was assigned to Carcharodontosaurinae by Canale et al. (2013), Novas et al. (2013) and Csiki-Sava et al. (2016).
