Taxonomy
Cetotherium helmersenii was named by Brandt (1871) [GMSPGGI, nos. 5-114-a, 5-114-b, 36-5, 36-6, 36-7, 36-10, 36-11, 36-12: incomplete skull (fragments); 6-114: afragment of the left mandibular ramus; 11-114, 12-114, 13-114, 20-114]. Its type specimen is SPMI GG 5–7/114, 10–13/114 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kuchugury, which is in a Sarmatian marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Cetotherium (Eucetotherium) helmersenii by Kellogg (1931); it was recombined as Vampalus helmerseni by Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012); it was recombined as Eucetotherium helmersenii by Goldin and Startsev (2014), Gol'din and Steeman (2015), Goldin and Startsev (2017).
It was recombined as Cetotherium (Eucetotherium) helmersenii by Kellogg (1931); it was recombined as Vampalus helmerseni by Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012); it was recombined as Eucetotherium helmersenii by Goldin and Startsev (2014), Gol'din and Steeman (2015), Goldin and Startsev (2017).
