Taxonomy
Bufo defensor was named by Meylan (2001). Its type specimen is UF 222916, a partial skull (frontoparietal), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Inglis IA, which is in a Gelasian terrestrial horizon in Florida.

| P. Meylan 2001 | The frontoparietals of Bufo defensor have a larger supraorbital crest than any other New World member of the genus. Although these crests are the same shape as those of Bufo terrestris, they are larger and end in a tall hemisphere posteriorly (Fig. 2C-D). |
