Archaeothrips latipennis was named by Priesner (1924). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Judge Fritsch (Goldap) collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in the Russian Federation. It is the type species of Achaetothrips, Gerontothrips, Archaeothrips.
It was recombined as Achaetothrips latipennis by Priesner (1929); it was recombined as Gerontothrips latipennis by Priesner (1949), Schliephake (2001), Schliephake (2005).
