Palaeostruthus was named by Wetmore (1925). Its type is Palaeospiza hatcheri.

It was assigned to Fringillinae by Hay (1930); to Emberizinae by Wetmore (1940); to Emberizidae by Wetmore (1956); and to Fringillidae by Lambrecht (1933), Brodkorb (1963).
