Pleurojulus was named by Fritsch (1899). Its type is Pleurojulus biornatus. It is the type genus of Pleurojulidae.
It was assigned to Helminthomorpha by Hoffman (1969); and to Pleurojulidae by Wilson and Hannibal (2005) and Štamberg and Zajíc (2008).
