Nyranius was named by Hoffman (1963). Its type is Julus costulatus. It is the type genus of Nyraniidae.
It was assigned to Xyloiulidae by Hoffman (1963); and to Nyraniidae by Hoffman (1969) and Štamberg and Zajíc (2008).
