Hustedia was named by Hall and Clarke (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 33,42,411,1128].

It was reranked as Retzia (Hustedia) by Schellwien (1900).

It was assigned to Retzia by Schellwien (1900); to Retziidae by Brunton and Champion (1974); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hustediinae by Williams et al. (2002) and Shen et al. (2003).
