Permithonopsis grandis was named by Martynova (1952). Its type specimen is PIN 117/2538, a hindwing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Sheimo-Gora (PIN collection 117), which is in a Roadian lagoonal siliciclastic in the Iva-Gora Beds Formation of the Russian Federation.
