Palaeosoma was named by Jackson et al. (1919). Its type is Acantherpestes giganteus. It is the type genus of Palaeosomatidae.
It was assigned to Euphoberiidae by Jackson et al. (1919) and Hoffman (1969); and to Palaeosomatidae by Hannibal and Krzemiński (2005).
