Pinegathyris was named by Grunt (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 897,1239].

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cleiothyridininae by Williams et al. (2002).
