Taxonomy
Phiocricetomys atavus was named by Coster et al. (2012). Its type specimen is Z5R-193, a tooth (right m2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Zallah 5, which is in an Oligocene fluvial-deltaic horizon in Libya.
