Pseudoprotathyris was named by Modzalevskaya (1979). Its type is Protathyris infantile.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Didymothyridinae by Musteikis and Modzalevskaya (2002), Williams et al. (2002).
