Taxonomy
Leptaena alternata was named by Conrad (1838). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Rafinesquina.

It was replaced with Leptaena trentonensis by Hall (1847); it was recombined as Strophomena alternata by Billings (1856); it was replaced with Rafinesquina trentonensis by Salmon (1942) and Cooper (1956); it was recombined as Rafinesquina alternata by Dewing (1999) and Cocks (2010).
