Plectatrypa was named by Schuchert and Cooper (1930). It is the type genus of Plectatrypinae.

It was corrected as Plectatrypa by Mitchell (1977), Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Carinatininae by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Mitchell (1977); to Atrypidae by Temple (1987), Jin and Chatterton (1997); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).
