Taxonomy
Acanthothiris was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: J Aale J Bajo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1,1091]. It is the type genus of Acanthothiridinae, Acanthothirididae.

It was assigned to Acanthothiridinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
