Aulacothyroides was named by Dagys (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 538].

It was assigned to Aulacothyroideidae by Bychkov et al. (1976), Dagys (1977); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Vectellinae by Williams et al. (2006).
