Bothrothyris was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Bothrothyris curiosa. It is the type genus of Bothrothyridinae.
It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bothrothyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
