Cyrtothyris was named by Middlemiss (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-u K Albi-m  Sepkoski's reference number: 776]. Its type is Terebratula depressa cyrta. 
It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rectithyridinae by Cooper (1993), Williams et al. (2006).
