Dyscolia was named by Fischer and Oehlert (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1,882]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Dyscoliinae, Dyscoliidae.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dyscoliinae by Williams et al. (2006).
