Kolymithyris was named by Dagys (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 538].

It was assigned to Zeilleridae by Bychkov et al. (1976); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Zeilleriinae by Williams et al. (2006).
