Notosia was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: J l Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Notosia chiliensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lobothyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
