Ornatothyris was named by Sahni (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 776]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gibbithyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
