Parakingena was named by Sun (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: K l Sepkoski's reference number: ZR81]. Its type is Parakingena xizangensis. It is the type genus of Parakingeninae.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Parakingeninae by Williams et al. (2006).
