Plesiothyris was named by Douville (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: J l J Plie-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538].

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); to Zeilleriinae by Williams et al. (2006); and to Aulacothyrinae by Baeza-Carratalá and García Joral (2014).

It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiothyris by Williams et al. (2006).
