Siphonophora hoffmani was named by Santiago-Blay and Poinar (1992). Its type specimen is Poinar DC-3-9 and is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.
