Sphaeroidothyris weiri was named by Hegab (1992). It is the type species of Cooperithyris, Sinaithyris.
It was recombined as Cooperithyris weiri by Feldman et al. (2012); it was recombined as Sinaithyris weiri by Feldman et al. (2014).
