Kentriodon hoepfneri
Taxonomy
Kentriodon hoepfneri was named by Kazár and Hampe (2014). It is not extant. Its type specimen is MNU-071/18, a partial skeleton (Skull including the occipital condyles, parts of the facial region of the left maxilla and frontal, both nasals and a fragment of the right frontal of the verte). Its type locality is Grosse-Pampau, which is in a Serravallian offshore shelf claystone in the Glimmerton Formation of Germany.

Hampe 2014 | A species of Kentriodon differing from Delphinodon, K. pernix, Kampholophos, Macrokentriodon, Rudicetus, and Tagicetus by having anteromedially globular nasal bones; from Tagicetus in the lack of a long and wide posterolateral projection of the nasal on the vertex and in the lack of an internasal fossa; from Rudicetus and Tagicetus by nasals having a distinct vertical notch on the anterior margin; from K. schneideri Whitmore and Kaltenbach, 2008, by having cranium with thinner frontal and maxilla dorsal to the orbit; from K. obscurus Barnes and Mitchell, 1984, by having a longer postorbital process of frontal; from K. hobetsu Ichishima, 1994, by having palatine with pointed anterior edge of the pterygoid sinus fossa; from K. pernix and K. obscurus by the less ventrally inclined posterior process of the periotic; from K. pernix, K. obscurus, Delphinodon, and Macrokentriodon in having a narrowly elliptical posterior bullar facet; from K. pernix in the lack of a ventral keel of the tympanic bulla; from Macrokentriodon and K. schneideri by the considerably smaller skull size; from Delphinodon, K. schneideri, Rudice- tus, Macrokentriodon, Kampholophos, and Tagicetus by having considerably smaller teeth or tooth alveoli; and from Delphino- don and Kampholophos in the lack of accessory cusps on the teeth. |
