Taxonomy
Gasterosteus aculeatus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

Synonyms
  • Pungitius haynesi was named by David (1945). Its type specimen is CIT 10347, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Piru Creek, US 99, which is in a Piacenzian marine shale in the Ridge Formation of California.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Gasterosteus aculeatus by Bell (1973).
