Discocystis was named by Gregory (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l C Step-u Sepkoski's reference number: 318,1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Discocystis kaskaskiensis. It is the type genus of Discocystinae.
It was assigned to Agelacrinitidae by Regnéll (1966); to Discocystinae by Sumrall (1996); and to Isorophida by Sepkoski (2002).
