Nucleocrinus was named by Conrad (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,523]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Nucleocrinidae by Beaver et al. (1967), Waters and Horowitz (1993); and to Spiraculata by Sepkoski (2002).
