Ascocystites was named by Barrande (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1075]. Its type is Ascocystites drabowensis. It is the type genus of Ascocystitidae.
It was assigned to Ascocystitidae by Beaver et al. (1967); and to Ascocystitida by Sepkoski (2002).
