Proetus scanicus was named by Olin (1906). Its type specimen is LO 1940T, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Decoroproetus scanicus by Owens (1973); it was recombined as Rorringtonia scanica by Owens (2004).
