Taxonomy

Palaeaster was named by Hall (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l]. Its type is Palaeaster niagarensis. It is the type genus of Palaeasteridae.

It was assigned to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake (2018).

Synonyms

Palaeaster exculptus was named by Miller (1881). Its type specimen is Holotype USNM 60608 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Promopalaeaster exculptus by Schuchert (1915); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Palaeaster by Blake (2018).
