Calyptactis was named by Spencer (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Calyptactis spinosus. It is the type genus of Calyptactininae.

It was assigned to Calyptactininae by Spencer (1930), Owen (1965); to Taeniactinidae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Asteroidea by Jell (1997); to Hemizonida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophiuroidea by Blake and Elliott (2003).
