Capellia was named by Blake and Reid (1998) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1265]. It is not extant. Its type is Capellia mauricei. It was considered monophyletic by Blake and Reid (1998).
It was assigned to Goniasteridae by Blake and Reid (1998); and to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002).
