Taxonomy
Tylasteria was named by Valette (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u K Albi Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Valvatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Goniasteridae by Valette (1929), Spencer and Wright (1966), Hess (1972), Breton (1992), Gale (2011) and Gale (2011).

G. Breton 1992Form robust, with a large disc and arm obtuse to slender, moderately wide at their base. Interbrachial arc rounded. Marginal plates numerous, wider than long, with a convex to angular profile, a convex external facecovered with large dense deeply impressed granule-pits that form a honeycomb surface and are sometime irregular in size. Abactinal plates relatively large, flattened, covered by hexagonal granule-pits. No pedicellariae-pits.
