Eokainaster was named by Blake (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo Sepkoski's reference number: 338]. It is not extant. Its type is Astropecten pewei.

It was assigned to Astropectinidae by Blake (1981); and to Paxillosida by Sepkoski (2002).

Blake 1981Astropectinid with small disc; five triangular, pointed arms; abactinals paxilliform, stout, marginals stout, fascioles angular, deep; two pair of marginals in each interbrachium; spines absent on superomarginals; inferomarginals little wider than superomarginals, bearing spines; actinal intermediates restricted to disc, apparently few in number; ambulacral - adambulacral articulation structures symmetrical.
