Taxonomy
Stenaster was named by Billings (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Stenasteridae. It was considered monophyletic by Dean Shackleton (2005).
It was reranked as Urasterella (Stenaster) by Hall (1868).
It was assigned to Urasterella by Hall (1868); to Stenurida by Sepkoski (2002); to Ophiuroidea by Blake (2013); and to Stenasteridae by Schuchert (1914), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Spencer (1951), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Dean Shackleton (2005), Blake et al. (2016).
