Taxonomy
Cheiropteraster was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Cheiropteraster giganteus. It is the type genus of Cheiropterasteridae.
It was assigned to Palasteriscidae by Schuchert (1915); to Cheiropterasteridae by Spencer (1934), Lehmann (1957) and Owen (1965); to Encrinasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Encrinasterinae by Harper and Morris (1978); and to Oegophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
