Taxonomy
Palaeophiura was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. It is the type genus of Palaeophiuridae.

It was assigned to Palaeophiuridae by Gregory (1897) and Schuchert (1915); to Protasteridae by Spencer (1940), Lehmann (1957), Owen (1965) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Oegophiurida by Sepkoski (2002).
